Tamu Gadang Gawai-Kaamatan KMSA 2009 is Here in Town!



TAMU GADANG KAAMATAN-GAWAI KMSA 2009

1. Theme

The theme is “tamu gadang” which means “a grand get-together in the marketplace” which is a very famous and popular scene in Sabah and Sarawak, especially in the month of Kaamatan and Gawai. The “tamu gadang” concept includes the shouts of market traders selling their wares, the sounds of native folk music filling the air, the scenes of cultural dances in every corner, intermingling with the influx of people to the tamu.

2. Activities

  • Food stalls: Jom Makan-makan

  • Interactive corners:



  1. Native food tasting corner:

  2. Learning cultural dance corner: ngajat, sumazau, magundatip

  3. Learning how to “blowpipe”corner: blowpipe some empty cans

  4. Mock ethnic tattoo corner: tattoo ethic motives on people’s faces, arms etc. using eyeliner to blend in the festival.



  • Special appearance by Kenyalang Kinabalu as interludes performing their dance from Studentcheskaja Vesna Competition.

  • Sugandoi or Karaoke competition

  • Multimedia corner: showcase of videos of Kaamatan n Gawai festival in Malaysia for the public to view.




3. Venue and Time

31 May 2009 – Sunday. 3.00pm Padfak Hall.

4. Sugandoi

  • Singing competition karaoke-style.

  • Contestants are encouraged to bring their own karaoke songs. (If that is not possible, we can provide songs and publish the song list so that they can pick themselves).

  • We will have a panel of judges to judge contestants on VOCALS, ORIGINALITY, PERFORMANCE, STAGE PRESENCE.

  • The results also include votes from the audience


Entrance ticket is 20 RUB per person, you are free to try everything provided in the Interactive Corner.
