Future Doctors™ S1E4 - End of Season 1

Last week on Future Doctors....

What do you get when great enthusiam is coupled with in depth understanding of the topics? A great episode of Future Doctors, that is. Future Doctors ended Season 1 with a BANG, with 3 equally competent and capable speakers.

The first among them was budding sugeon, Vigneswaran Kumarasamy, who started off the session with his topic "Operative Treatment of Biliary Hypertension". He beginned by enumerating the numerous causes of biliary hypertension and elaborated on each of them thereon. Using the drawings on the whiteboard and the analogy of  'plumbing' , he simplified the explanation of the different anastomoses used in the treatment of biliary hypertension.

Next in the line, we have Titus Chai Koh Siang with his topic, 'The Ebola Virus". He started off with a very interesting piece of information - The fact that this virus is even more lethal than any virus causing worldwide pandemic to date. SARS or even the recent Influenza A (H1N1) is no where comparable to it as it is classify as biosafety level 4 agent, as well as a Category A bioterrorism agent by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, USA. He further explained that to deal with an infection of such degree would require the use of a Hazmat suit and a self-contained oxygen supply is mandatory. Sounds similar to what you might have seen in the movies? It truely is!

Last but not least, we have Patricia Sii, our graduating senior, who chose to talk on Rheumatic Fever - a topic which students from 3rd year onwards are familiar with. In her talk, she introduced some mneumonics to help us to better remember the Duckett-Jones' Diagnostic criteria of Rheumatic Fever.

Remember the Major signs? It's SPECS - Sydenham's Chorea, Polyarthritis migrans, Erythema marginatum, Carditis, Skin abnormalities.

How about the Minor signs? It's PEACH - Proteinuria, ESR, Arthralgia, C-Reactive Protein (CRP) , Heart Block.

There you go. With that, our program has come to an end for this semester in view of the final examinations. We would like to thank all the speakers who participated actively and voluntarily, without whom, our program would not be as successful as it is today. Thanks also to students who have been with us since Day 1. We sincerely hope that this program would benefit students in the long run.

That's all for now, see you in
